Mobile devices have the potential of supporting school based OT practitioners with intervention activities, utilities and productivity tools due to its ease of use, portability, multimedia and wide selection of apps. Use of mobile devices such as the iPad in the school environment have been proposed to increase student engagement, access and efficiency, however identifying appropriate apps for student and therapist use can be overwhelming and time consuming.

This presentation will focus on iPad apps and applications for the school based OT Practitioner. Apps and application in the areas of fine motor/visual motor, visual perception, handwriting, sensory processing and self-regulation will be reviewed and demonstrated as they relate to school based practice. Access and production of curriculum tasks for reading, writing and math as it relates to OT intervention and inclusion of pre-school to high school students will be addressed. iPad features and apps supporting assessment, documentation and administrative tasks for the OT practitioner will also be explored.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to...

  • Identify iPad apps that can support the occupational performance of school aged students in skill areas of visual motor integration, visual perceptual, development of handwriting, self-regulation and sensory processing.
  • Identify iPad apps that can support occupational performance of school aged students access and production of reading, writing and math tasks.
  • Explore iPad accessories such as stands, styluses, keyboards used for input, scanning and positioning that support the needs of users.
  • Apply device features and apps that can increase efficiency with administrative tasks required of the school based OT.

Participants will receive access to categorized OT app lists, app category feature match handouts, hands on experience with iPad equipment and apps. Prior workshop participants received numerous promo codes for featured pay apps.

Bring your own apps and experiences with integrating mobile devices into school based practice and share with others. This presentation requires the participant to bring an iPad 2, or newer or iPad Mini, basic iPad navigation skills, and an active iTunes account, user name and password.

About Carol

Carol Leynse Harpold, MS, AdEd, OTR/L, ATP is the author of the popular blog,  “OT’s with Apps”.  Carol has more than 30 years of Occupational Therapy experience in early intervention, school based therapy, acute care, long term care, home health and adult rehabilitation. She holds a Masters of Science in Adaptive Education/Assistive Technology and has 15 years experience with evaluating and coordinating assistive technology services in education of elementary, middle school, secondary and post secondary students.  Her experience also includes evaluation and intervention of assistive technology and ergonomics with Adaptive Technology Resources to vocational rehabilitation clients in work transition, work sites and academic settings.

About Erin

Erin Higgins PictureErin Higgins, COTA has 10 years of school based OT experience working with early childhood through 12th grade students with emotional, sensory, motor, cognitive impairments and their assistive technology needs. Other OT work experience includes 6 years in an acute care and rehabilitation setting. Erin brings a strong knowledge in computer technology from her completion of a Computer Information Systems/Microcomputer Specialist Associate's Degree completed prior to her OT career. She currently is enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in OT.
